General Assembly

Disarmament and International Security

The first committee (DISEC) focuses on the maintenance of world peace, the regulation of international conflicts as well as the one of armaments. It also plays a fundamental role in the maintenance of dialogue between countries and disarmament.

Economic and Financial

ECOFIN or GA2 focuses on issues concerning worldwide economic growth as well as other subjects related to globalization, innovation in different sectors or business issues. It may also include dealing with delicate situations occurring in specific countries.

Social, Humanitarian and Cultural

SOCHUM or GA3, as its name suggests deals with issues related to human rights and their violation, humanitarian law, specific aid or attention needed to be given to countries facing difficulties etc. Unlike other GA committees, it deals with a great variety of issues being at stake around the world and has the ability to mobilise many UN bodies.

Legal

The Legal Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly. It aims at promoting justice and international law. It deals with accountability and internal UN justice matters, as well as drug control, crime prevention and combating international terrorism.

Human Rights

The Human Rights Council is responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.

Specialized Agencies and Councils

Environmental

The Environmental Committee aims at promoting sustainable and durable solutions to combat the effects of global warming, both on a local and international scale. The committee has been added to the 2021 LFHMUN conference in order to demonstrate our concern regarding the current problem of climate change. In fact, a responsible ecological transition could help humanity overcome major social and economic challenges, linked to the terrible consequences of climate change.

United Nations' Office on Drugs and Crime

The agency's focus is the trafficking in and abuse of illicit drugscrime prevention and criminal justice, international terrorism, and political corruption. Through the selected subjects, delegates will have the opportunity to exchange on matters that hold a significant importance in modern societies.

Group of Twenty

The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stabilityclimate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

Security Council

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter. Its powers include establishing peacekeeping operations, enacting international sanctions, and authorizing military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.

Historical Crisis

The Historical Crisis Committee is a very different type of committee which, of course, does not exist in the real UN. Delegates taking part in this committee will have to "know their history" as it will recreate a certain period of world History during which worldwide stability was struck by conflict or severe disagreement between Nations. The delegates will have to play the role of head of state in an attempt to change the course of History (or not). They will have to cooperate in order to tackle the Crisis announced by the Secretary General prior to the Conference.

Scientific Forum

The Scientific Forum is a new and very different member of the LFHMUN. It does not exist as presented in the real UN but has similar ideas to existing forums like for example the Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation. By taking part in this committee you will have the chance to tackle issues related to modern science and a futuristic aspect of the world we live in. The delegates will deliberate on the current conference's crisis addressed by the Secretary-General and have innovative brainstormings relating to the forum's topics.

International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. This is the most particular mun organ we will be hosting and works in a very different way compared to our "traditional" committees.  In the ICJ you will find a President, a Vice-President, a Registrar, and four Advocates (two representing each party). During the conference, the judges participating will have to focus on both parties and reach a verdict. Additionally, chosen witnesses will be attending the trial. People taking part in the ICJ will need to have basic law knowledge and be aware of the case's context, the element of surprise won't be missing...

World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a particularly important asset in our community since it oversees issues about global health, establishes guidelines and standards, defines evidence-based policy alternatives, gives governments technical assistance, and examines and monitors health trends. The WHO's objectives are always to assist vulnerable populations, safeguard international security, and of course, develop health. Access to appropriate and affordable healthcare is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of the WHO's mission. This committee has been added in 2023 and delegates will have the opportunity to debate on topics concerning international medical issues and come up with solutions for each of them.
